Statement on the use of roadways - April 2015

The Cayman Ministers' Association views the continuing carnage on our roads in 2015 with deep concern. We believe that many of the mishaps that have taken place this year were preventable, and that it is absolutely incumbent upon drivers of all vehicles, especially motor-vehicles, which are lethal weapons when they are misused, to take stock of the terrible consequences that can arise from even a moment of distraction.

We ask of all drivers of cars and motor-cycles:

Do not ever drive while impaired by alcohol or any controlled substance, or by the illegal use of cellphones or other devices.

Exercise the care and responsibility that is due for all other road users of any description - walkers, cyclists, joggers and other drivers. Never leave the scene of any accident you are involved in.

Use your turn-indicators often and sensitively so that other road users can understand your intentions.

Do not misuse double road lanes by weaving in and out dangerously, keep within the intended lane, including at roundabouts, and never "crowd" the vehicle in front of you.

Be cognisant of the speed limits on all highways and observe them.

Finally note that our road behaviour impacts other people. Therefore, on the road let us indeed "love our neighbour as ourselves"

Let us be a blessing to others, and not a curse, as we use the roadways.
